Migration from new to old EU member states has remained low after enlargement but could lead to a "youth drain," a report warned Thursday.
|
According to the study, which was carried out by the advocacy group European Citizen Action Service and based on official figures from the eight former communist countries that joined the EU last year, the Eastern European workforce takes up 0.4 percent of the EU-15 labor market.
However, 3 to 5 percent of recent college graduates leave their home countries in search for better jobs and wages in the West. Poland and Hungary, in particular, have begun worrying about the so-called youth drain, the report said.
The most popular destinations for young East Europeans are the three countries that have no restrictions on work permits for EU citizens -- Ireland, Britain and Sweden.
